Demons

Singular Demon, Plural Demons, Adjective Demonic

There are beings in Empyreus which are referred to as ‘Demons’ by the other races due to their unsightly nature and tendency to kill for personal gain. These ‘Demons’ are in fact regular sapient beings that have had their connections to the void shortened, making them actively aware of the nature of reality and binding its currents to them. This gives them the power to use void magic, which can be used to directly alter reality in limited ways, unleash powerful attacks, or to reshape themselves with a great deal of time and effort. On the other hand, this also causes them become constantly aware of their own mortality. Every day the void around them becomes a bit stronger, a bit blacker, the noose becoming ever tighter. It is little surprise that this drives many to try and prolong their lives at the expense of others.

Void life drain

Void magic gives them the power to heal themselves or extend their natural lifespan by absorbing vitality from other beings. If someone is dying, a demon can take advantage of their growing connection to the void in order to absorb that individual’s very void essence, taking with it their memories and consciousness before killing the body. While draining vitality will keep a demon alive, draining someone dry will also make the demon more powerful. The victim thus does not join with the void as normal, but ends up in a sort of limbo inside the demon, unable to think or act. A demon can look into the memories and experiences of those they absorb, but it is difficult to find anything particularly useful in those memories without a great deal of time and effort combing through them. This act is especially reviled by all of the various paradise philosophies, as it prevents an individual and their experiences from reaching the afterlife.

Succubi, Incubi, Omnibi

An insult or derisive term for demons that choose to prey on victims through sex and desires. The sorts who’ve learned to use void magic to reshape their bodies in ways to hide their taint and make them appear unnaturally attractive and beautiful to those around them. On the other hand, such a term also carries with it such connotations as being masters of sex and seduction and can be interpreted as a complement in the right context. Some demons embrace this persona, actively advertising themselves as such to draw in victims or a personal harem of fools seeking to experience exactly what such a being as to offer.

Rifts

A demon’s death is not a quiet thing. When their lives are ended through violent means their connections to the void are ripped open and become a direct conduit to the void, a rift. Rifts are highly destructive forces, causing massive local storms that can tear through the landscape with ease. At the same time they drain the vitality of any living creatures nearby. The more powerful the demon was in life, the larger and more violent the rift that forms after death. Rifts will eventually fade when the life of its creator would have run out, but if regularly fed new life they can last indefinitely.
